That great Legacy sound in a “smaller footprint.” Recently, a pallet arrived at my doorstep (literally) with 3 boxes from Springfield, Illinois. The two largest boxes contained the Legacy Signature XD loudspeakers in a delicious Pearl Black finish, and a smaller box containing XLR and power cables.

These speakers boast a “smaller footprint” than most of the Legacy speakers, but at 110 pounds each, I had to hire two guys to carry them up nineteen steps to my media room. Even unboxing and setting up took patience and effort, but in the end, it was well worth the time.
The Basics:
The Legacy Audio Signature XD is a slim five-driver tower speaker with a four-way configuration. Though it only takes up about one square foot of floor space and stands tall at 48 inches, they each weigh 110 pounds. Part of their weight is due to the internal 650-watt amplifier. The upper registers are handled by a dual AMT tweeter, with a 1-inch treble driver and a 4-inch pleated diaphragm (upper mid/treble) for excellent transient response. My own speakers have an AMT tweeter, of which I am partial to. The next driver down is the 7-inch graphene-filled carbon fiber midrange driver with a copper phase plug. The system is then grounded with two 10-inch woofers with rigid aluminum diaphragms and heavy rubber surrounds. The cabinets are not ported and can be placed closer to the front wall than rear-ported speakers, reducing early room reflections and coloration. My review set came in a stunningly beautiful Pearl Black (Premium) finish, with small silver specks that, upon closer inspection, created a starfield effect.

The Rundown:
Once I muscled them into place, I connected their power cords and their XLR inputs to my Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista 600.2 integrated amplifier, and I was ready to go. Unlike some of the other Legacy speakers, the XD did not have any trim switches on the back. Instead, there was a single toggle for “full range” with the balanced input, or “upper range,” which allows you to run the mid/treble drivers with another amp (or, for example, a low-powered tube amp). My initial impressions were sweet highs with plenty of detail, excellent, solid, clear mids for vocal reproduction. The bass was, well… I’ll go into my impressions on this in my upcoming review.

The Follow-Up:
I took a factory tour of Legacy Audio’s home office and production facility years ago. I spent time with Bill Duddleston and watched the entire manufacturing process, from design and cabinet construction to final testing before shipping. (Legacy Factory Tour) I look forward to seeing if that Legacy heritage continues with the Signature XD speakers. I’ll let you know in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
