How to store vinyl records the right way so they don’t warp on you

Як зберігати вінілові платівки правильно, щоб вони не деформувалися

I ruined my favorite vinyl moon record I really liked by leaving it out on a shelf near my living room window, came back after a weekend away and it was warped enough that the needle couldn’t track properly anymore. But I realized I needed to take storage seriously instead of just leaving records wherever they fit. So here are some tips for anyone who wants to avoid making the same dumb mistakes. Keep everything vertical. Records leaning at angles develop warps over time from the uneven weight distribution, even slight angles compound if you leave them long enough. Store them upright like books with enough support on either side that they stand straight without leaning. Heat is the big one (I learned from experience lol). Vinyl softens at a lower temperature than you’d expect and direct sunlight through a window will absolutely cook a record left in its path. Keep your collection away from windows, radiators, heating vents, anything that generates warmth. I learned this the hard way and it’s not a mistake you make twice because you can hear the damage immediately

Swap your inner sleeves if they’re paper. The standard paper inners that come with most records shed tiny particles over time that end up sitting in the grooves and cause surface noise. Anti-static poly sleeves are cheap and make a noticeable difference especially if you’re storing records for the long term. Outer sleeves protect the jackets from shelf wear and moisture which matters if you care about condition. Don’t stack records flat, ever. It puts the full weight of the stack on the bottom records and the grooves compress over time. I’ve seen people store 30 records in a flat pile on a coffee table and wonder why the bottom 5 sound terrible. Vertical, always. And if you’re in an apartment with exterior walls that get cold in winter, keep a little gap between the shelf and the wall so temperature fluctuation doesn’t transfer directly into your collection. Even half an inch of airflow makes a difference.
