The music technology company Matter Squared was founded by Dr. Seth Thorn, a violinist and researcher whose work sits at the intersection of music, technology, and learning.

The company’s first product, the Audio Shoulder Rest (ASR), enhances the shoulder rest, using Bluetooth and haptic technology to offer extra capacity in the training of rhythm, posture, and technique.

The shoulder rest acts as a speaker and can therefore play backing tracks and other music to assist with practice. It can also function as a metronome, either playing the click-track aloud or pulsing vibrations against the player’s body to deliver rhythmic impulses in a sensory manner.

The ASR also contains an integrated motion sensor that detects fine-grained movements such as tilt, rotation, and acceleration of the instrument. The user can therefore also use the ASR as a posture tool: for instance, if posture drops below a set angle, the ASR will respond with a slow-onset haptic tap to remind the player to lift the instrument.

The technology for this shoulder rest was developed at Arizona State University’s School of Arts, Media and Engineering in collaboration with PADT Inc., a product development firm in the Southwest. It is protected by issued and pending patents, and was recognized as a finalist at the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at Georgia Tech.

Inventor Seth Thorn studied the violin in the Vamos studio at Northwestern University, and also studied in Germany as a Fulbright scholar, before completing a PhD in music technology at Brown University. He has worked with artists including Daniel Barenboim, and currently serves as a professor at Arizona State University, where he is a Principal Investigator on NSF-funded programs in technology and learning.
