The Lemonheads: Love Chant

Led by Evan Dando, the de facto leader, founder, and only remaining original member, The Lemonheads make a welcome return on Love Chant. The Boston-based Dando relocated to São Paulo, Brazil, a few years ago, and the new locale inspired him to get back in the game with new material and a team of former collaborators. Apollo Nove, the Brazilian producer, helped Dando shape Love Chant with familiar musical arrangements. The opening rush of “58 Second Song” instantly reminds us of Dando’s gifts: his honeyed tenor, bittersweet melodic sensibility, and offbeat charisma. Dando came of age in the grunge era—and that distorted crunch gooses his guitar in almost every song here. On “Deep End,” J Mascis adds his own soaring guitar to the rocker, and Juliana Hatfield joins on background vocals. John Kent’s energetic drum playing drives “In the Margin” with Dando’s angular guitar attack. “Togetherness Is All I’m After,” one of the highlights and an electric nugget worthy of The Lemonheads’ best, alters push/pull dynamics with a golden melody spun by John Strohm’s rugged guitar. Dando pulls out his acoustic for “The Key of Victory,” and the song’s melancholic glow with a tinge of country winds down Love Chant in soothing overtones of bliss.
