Sharing a strange irregularity on Canadian pressings of the Van der Graaf album “The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome”

An earlier thread about VdG(G) albums gave me the idea to talk about this a bit.

I find regional variants of albums really interesting, and while my home country (Canada) doesn’t have that many which I would consider notable, I did want to share this one.

When I first came across this copy of QZ/PD, I was quite perplexed to notice that all the track timings are drastically off compared to every other version of the album (what do you mean Cat’s Eye is 14 ½ minutes long???)

It turns out that these aren’t reflective of the track lengths but rather the timestamp of where in the side’s overall runtime each song ends. As this is not a recognised standard of indicating track length, this has the effect of making the runtimes of each song appear unusually long (e.g. if we take Side 2 at face value, the total runtime is around 68 minutes, which far exceeds the length possible for a single side of most commercially-available vinyl records). I have never come across any other records formatted like this, Canadian or otherwise, and it doesn’t look like anything from Charisma Records’ catalogue from this time period attempted anything like this again.

I’m genuinely not sure if this was a mistake or some kind of weird alternative formatting that never really caught on. Does anyone have further insight?
