Smart audio gains ground in horticulture
Greenhouse horticulture is investing heavily in automation, energy savings and labor optimization. According to entrepreneur Peter van Beek of Sol 4 Audio, based in the Netherlands, this is also driving demand for professional audio solutions that improve safety, streamline work processes and create a more pleasant working environment.
"Many companies still rely on a single radio playing in the background," says Peter. "But a modern sound system can do much more. By combining music, announcements, safety alerts and automated break signals, you create more calm, structure and control on the work floor."

Sol 4 Audio has spent years developing and installing professional sound systems. Greenhouse operations and processing facilities are increasingly looking for ways to keep staff better informed and organize their processes more efficiently.
This trend ties in with growing attention to workplace safety and quality assurance. Under certification schemes such as MPS-GAP and MPS-SQ, companies must be able to inform employees quickly and clearly in the event of an emergency. A central sound system with public-address functionality supports this kind of safety communication. "Announcements don’t have to go through a microphone alone, they can also be made by phone, or even through Teams."

According to Peter, a good system doesn’t start with the speaker, but with understanding the business itself. "We always look at the type of crop, the height of the greenhouse and the machine noise in the processing areas. That determines how sound behaves in the space and how you should build up the installation logically. A six-meter-high pepper greenhouse calls for a different approach than a cut-flower nursery."
"Beyond safety, a central audio system also brings practical benefits," Peter explains. "Automated break signals ensure that employees start and end breaks at the same time. That reduces confusion, limits unnecessary lost time and creates more structure on the work floor. Over the course of a year, that can add up to significant savings in labor time, which contributes to the return on investment of a sound system."
Volume can be adjusted per room, and internet radio makes it easy to access stations from different countries, a feature especially appreciated by companies with international staff.

Sol 4 Audio’s systems are built using components suited to the horticultural environment, able to withstand high humidity, intensive use and prolonged exposure to light, air and moisture. The company’s systems have now been installed at more than 1,000 horticultural businesses.
Through the platform Muziekindekas.nl, Peter hopes to show that professional audio is more than background music. "A well-designed audio system is a practical tool that contributes every day to safety, communication, labor productivity and workplace enjoyment," Peter concludes.
